Biographical Statement

Monet Lewis-Timmons is an English PhD candidate and African American Public Humanities Initiative (AAPHI) Fellow at the University of Delaware. Her research prioritizes 19th and 20th century Black women’s archives through the collection of writer, educator, and activist Alice Dunbar-Nelson (1875-1935) to understand why and how Dunbar-Nelson crafted her archive throughout her lifetime. Through curation and public speaking, Monet’s work encourages scholars, students, and community members to rethink their understanding of Black women’s history and reflect on their own archive formation.

Candidate Statement

I am excited to apply for the role of the Nominating Committee Member for the Society of Georgia Archivists this year! SGA has had an instrumental role in my development as an emerging professional since I heard about the organization last summer. Since learning more about SGA, I've had opportunities to present at the annual conference and was the recent recipient of the Taronda Spencer Award. Because of the opportunity to attend and present at last year's annual meeting, I've been able to confidently grow into a young archivist as I feel supported to share my work and explore my ideas. Because of SGA's impact, I would like to make sure other archivists, especially young Black archivists, have similar opportunities for professional envelopment and community. I would be a great addition to the Nominating Committee because of my enthusiasm for this profession and eagerness to open the doors for others. I am also excited to learn more about what it means to join the board of an organization and exploring ways to find my voice as I continue to learn.
