This workshop is for archivists, librarians and managers who want to increase their understanding on how to implement DEI initiatives into their institutions or departments. This four-hour workshop will show participants how to make small changes that leads to big DEI initiatives. Each hour will focus on a different aspect of DEI, we will discuss why DEI is important, how to identify and address environmental factor that work against DEI efforts and highlighting the intersectional nature of DEI efforts and explaining how to look beyond gender or race when thinking about DEI initiatives. Participants will walk away from the webinar with real-world tools for how to address a variety of scenarios as well as a reading list, glossary of terms, and a reference list of where to turn for more help. Through role playing and discussion participants will have the opportunity to try out the concepts discussed over the course of the workshop.

Michelle Ganz is the Director of Archives for the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Over the course of her career, she has been speaking and writing about DEI and the intersectionality of accessibility. Michelle was a part of the SAA’s push to create guidelines for accessibility in archives as well as a founding member of the Accessibility & Disability Section. As a mixed race, disabled, bi woman from small town Ohio Michelle is intimately aware of how a lack of diversity can lead to siloed thinking. Over the course of her career Michelle has worked to help people avoid the scenarios that she has faced as a professional and as a person. Michelle received her MLIS from the University of Arizona and her Bachelors in Medieval literature from the Ohio State University.

This workshop is conducted in a hybrid format. It will include both in-person and virtual options.
